A Splash of Shimmer

I have always, and probably will always, have a fascination(which borders on obsession) with jewelry. Dainty, chunky, costume or classic, you name it, I’ve coveted it. I like to think that my obsession has a logic behind it. You see, jewelry is not just a fun way to accessorize but also a smart and easy way to transform any outfit. I have key go-to outfits for work that, if it wasn’t for my lively jewelry, would look boring or overdone. It is also a fast way to turn a “running-around-town-doing-errands” outfit into a “cocktail-with-friends-night-out” outfit.  Tom Binns and Kate Spade are my current jewelry guru’s but since my budget is not as luxurious as to afford Binns’ stunning creations, sometimes I find Forever 21 and H&M can do the trick!

However, if your birthday or anniversary is coming up or if you just want to treat yourself because, well let’s be honest, you deserve it (you do!) then these pieces below would be a fantastic and fun way to splurge.

Cutting for Stone Rave

I like writing lists.

I have a long, so very long, list of “must read”.

I only add to that list books that are recommended by friends or classics that I have not yet read (like Catcher in the Rye…I know, I know…please don’t judge me)

Cutting for Stone had been on my list for far too long and I finally decided to tackle it this past Christmas. It was one of those wonderful reads that captivated me; I could not put it down and when I did I often imagined what would happen next.

It is a beautiful saga, set in Ethiopia, that slowly unfolds a secret between an Indian nun and a cold British doctor through the lives of two twins, Marion and Shiva. As they boys grow up and begin to experience different events in their lives such as exile, betrayal, the trials of brotherhood and love, the emotions that come along with it all have a way of weaving their way through the pages and into your heart.  It is a beautifully written masterpiece that invites you into Ethiopia and asks you to grow up side-by-side with the two boys. This novel will move you to the core. I have not shed as many tears over a book since I was in grade 6 and read The Diary of Anne Frank. That being said, I highly suggest you read this in the privacy of your home lest you freak out passengers on the subway (its not fun, trust me.)

So if you are looking for a fantastic book to read this summer, this is it!  If you find yourself ever saying ” I just don’w know what to read”- this is it! If you bored out of your mind one day after work, or during your commute and the tweets on twitter are no longer sufficient to entertain you- this is it!

However, beware, as once you are done reading you will find yourself in a state of mind that I like to call the “book hangover” and will be unable to pick up another book for at least a month.

P.S. what do you recommend I read this summer?

Mexican Embroidery

 {My sister, my mom and I in Oaxaca Mexico}

When I was younger my mom used to dress my sister and I in traditional Mexican dresses; although at that time I thought they were ugly and tacky I have now come to cherish the look and love the few pictures we have of us wearing them. I found my mom’s most recent visit to Mexico as the perfect opportunity and asked her to bring back some of the beautiful embroidered shirts that she used to buy for us when we were younger. Although she was a bit confused that after all my years of refusing to wear typical Mexican clothing I was now reverting back to it, she proudly returned with a stunning hand-crafted shirt. Back in the day I used to wear my embroidered dresses with sparkly head bands and light-up flip flops, though now, I am officially looking forward for warmer weather so I can pair this beautiful peasant shirt with my favourite pair of white jeans, a bright pink belt and some gladiators.

To think that someone took the time and effort to embroider this beauty by hand makes me even more appreciative of this lovely new addition to my wardrobe.
